Invitation to The Tadeusz Ulewicz Memorial Conference
Antoni Stąpor of Antykwariat Abecadlo and Teresa Bałuk-Ulewiczowa have the pleasure to invite you to the Tadeusz Ulewicz Memorial Conference and Bibliophile Auction. The Conference will honour the life and scholarship, literary and bibliophile interests of Professor Tadeusz Ulewicz (1917–2012) to mark his 109th birthday, and at the Auction, which will be held on-site and on-line, you will be able to bid for a selection of books and old printed works from Professor Ulewicz’s collection. The Conference will be followed by a concert performed by Michał “Luperman” Wójcik.
“We have professors who are distinguished, as we all know, but we also have ones who are legends in their own lifetime, and that’s just what Professor Tadeusz Ulewicz was. Apart from being a distinguished scholar, he was also a great Polish patriot and a man of outstanding integrity,” says Professor Lucjan Suchanek.
Tadeusz Ulewicz (1917–2012) was a historian of literature and for many years held the Chair of Early Polish Literature at the Jagiellonian University, Kraków. An eminent authority on the poet Jan Kochanowski and his work, early Polish printing, and Polish–Italian cultural relations, Tadeusz Ulewicz published over 500 books and articles on these subjects. He was a member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences and several other Polish and foreign learned societies. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Università Cattolica di Sacro Cuore, Milan (1981), and by the University of Łódź (1998). The numerous Polish and Italian distinctions conferred on him included the Commander’s Cross with Star of the Polonia Restituta; the Italian distinction Grande Ufficiale (1 Classe) Ordine Stella della Solidarietà Italiana, awarded by the President of the Republic of Italy (2003); and the Gloria Artis Gold Medal for his contribution to Polish culture (2006).

Three scholars, Professors Krzysztof Koehler, Grzegorz Nieć, and Mirosław Lenart, all smitten with an academic predilection for research areas that fascinated Tadeusz Ulewicz. Professor Koehler, of the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University, Warsaw, was Ulewicz’s student and will present episodes from well-nigh a lifetime of academic reminiscences of his erstwhile tutor.
Professor Nieć holds the Chair of Information Culture at the National Commission of Education University, Kraków. He will speak on the history of bibliophilism and bibliophile associations. Professor Mirosław Lenart graduated in Polish Philology and Theology from the University of Opole. His research interests focus on Polish–Italian relations, and he has been a visiting professor at the University of Padua. He will speak on the Polish–Italian work of Tadeusz Ulewicz.
A concert by the Cracovian musician, guitarist, vocalist Michał “Luperman” Wójcik, who will give a performance of songs from his forthcoming album, including poems by Jan Kochanowski set to music.
Visitors to Antykwariat Abecadlo will also have the opportunity to see a poster and graphics exhibition of the work of graphic artist Kazimierz Wiśniak from the Hieronim Sieński Collection and his illustrations for occasional prints issued by Biały Kruk.
